I have no idea how the government in SD reached the point where it could operate on its own without any oversight. Why is Wasko spending money she was not authorized to spend? Why are we going to be importing prisoners (we don't have enough people here to fill the beds)? Why is the state getting into the prison business? I am sure we have the same insanity in every area of the government. It appears that the best solution is to cut the property tax and cut the government as well.
Your perspective is 100% accurate. I just finished listening to committee testimony on the new prison. If this ultimately billion dollar project is built, along with the $4.1 million in increased annual operating cost, I think we can bid farewell to any tax relief. We need to listen to people such as retired Warden Doug Weber, who shares solid suggestions for how we can address this issue at a much lower cost, both for construction and ongoing operating costs. After listening to today's testimony, I'm concerned there are some squishy Representatives who are going to go along to get along with the Establishment, who unfortunately has led us down this road. These same people are the ones who have put us in this property tax dilemma. We CAN turn back and we MUST turn back...or our children and grandchildren will pay the price. Every South Dakotan needs to contact every House Representative to ask them to vote NO on this proposed prison!
“But you didn’t and now we are here.” The crux of it all!
Most of the Legislators voted YES already on the “Revise the…fees” bills in Appropriations or Taxation committees. I read the Bills. 100% increase on one caught my eye and directly hits our family. Revise?” I call BullShift!
99.9% of the people have no clue what ties them to pay property tax. IF you owned your land out right, holding the Land Patent (or warrant) given to them by the National Govt, meaning if you still held all 4 documents to ownership of land (patent, deed, title, purchase), the State could not assess, nor tax your land. There are still many acreages of sovereign land out there today in South Dakota where people do NOT pay property tax on their land or property, due it being outside the state jurisdiction. The property tax rate is NOT to high, its roughly 1.47% of every $1000 value of property. However, it is all based on "land speculation" by yours truly - the big land owners, property holders, real estate agents, developers. They speculate future land value based on "user types" - agricultural, residential, commercial, mixed-use. Counties are NOT actually inspecting your property today, they are basing it off the "SALES AMOUNT" and they assume your property has the same value, especially where your house looks like your neighbors house. It is all speculation. The tax rate is not wrong, the "Methology" is wrong. It's all done based on speculation through market driven forces, and less about actual, inspected values. But also remember, like when the IRS sends you a W-2, they falsely assess your income, presuming you owe tax on the income reported. Property tax is the same, the County will send you a "False Assessment" based on sales prices of properties in your general area, whereas, prior to paying the tax, you must SELF ASSESS your property by obtaining 3 or more estimates, assessments to counter the county assessment. People challenge their assessments all the time, and pay a much lower tax as they obtain those private assessments. You see, the County looks at it as such, you bought your home to create a profit, so they expect your home to up in value based on market driven forces. What they do not take into account, is that you bought your home not to make money from it, but to use it raise family, to be your actual "Home". Fact is, you gave the state the right to tax your land value, cause you surrended your LAND PATENT ages ago. Most of you did it cause you expected something from the government - public education, health care, child care, whatever the agreement.

The telltale sign that someone is Establishment is if they defend the status quo, and fear changes that may benefit the People.
Awesome article! Spot on!

Could we just raise the state sales tax and eliminate property taxes?
My property taxes have tripled in the last 5 years. And I’ve done nothing to improve the value of my property other than a new roof.
As a retailer & unpaid tax collector, I am against that idea.
